West Lombok, July 26, 2025 — The State Hindu University (IAHN) Gde Pudja Mataram, through its Cultural and Religious Tourism Study Program, held a Beach Cleanup and Wildlife Release activity at Loang Baloq Beach, Tanjung Karang Subdistrict, Sekarbela District, Mataram City. The event carried the theme: “Beach Cleanup Movement: A Real Impact Program of IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram in Support of the Sustainable Development Goals.” It began at 07:00 WITA and was attended by members of the academic community, including lecturers, students, and local community leaders.
The event opened with a communal prayer as an expression of gratitude and a plea for protection from Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa. It was followed by the release of marine life such as baby turtles and fish, as well as birds into the wild. This symbolic gesture highlighted the harmony between humans and nature and served as a tangible effort to protect the coastal environment.
The Rector of IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram, Prof. Dr. Ir. I Wayan Wirata, A.Ma., S.E., M.Si., M.Pd., emphasized that the activity embodies the values of Tri Hita Karana, particularly palemahan, the harmonious relationship between humans and the natural environment.
He also expressed his sincere appreciation to the Head of Sekarbela Subdistrict, the Head of Tanjung Karang Urban Village, and the local community organizations for their active involvement and support. “We sincerely thank the Subdistrict Head, Village Head, community organizations, and all parties involved for their valuable support and participation in making this impactful activity a success,” he stated. “Their presence and collaboration reflect a strong spirit of togetherness in preserving the environment and promoting social harmony.”
This initiative is also part of the university’s commitment to the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, especially community service. More than just cleaning up waste, the program stressed the importance of protecting marine life, bird species, and the broader coastal ecosystem.
Loang Baloq Beach is widely recognized as a sacred space for both Hindu and Muslim religious rituals, conducted in a spirit of mutual respect. The area stands as a symbol of interfaith harmony in Mataram City. The recent achievements of Tanjung Karang Subdistrict — receiving the titles of "Harmony-Aware Subdistrict" and First Place in the Tourism Village Award — further solidify its reputation as a beacon of tolerance, peace, and social unity.
IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram remains committed to organizing similar programs in the future, involving diverse institutions and community elements. These efforts not only promote environmental preservation but also strengthen spiritual, social, and cultural values in pursuit of a harmonious future between humanity and nature.
